The M’Carthys and O’Briens, the Murphys and A’Hearne’s O’Sullivans and Dwyers, O’Loughlins and the Burns. The Collins’s and the Walsh’s, O’Shanahans and the Bradys, the Flynns, the Reagans and the Doyles, the Careys and O’Gradys. The Whelans and the Barrys, O’Keefe, O’Shea and Quinn. Sestanovitch and Nikovic - Sestanovitch and Nikovic ! - I don't know how they got in. (taken from 'Newtown: the parish of St Paul's' Tommy Walsh)

Peerless' Jim Driscoll was without doubt Newtown's most famous son and Sporting hero. However, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Priests and Nuns and MPs (and one or two villains no doubt) also eminated from these humble beginnings. The above names, taken from Tommy Walsh's poem, are but a few of the families who lived in Newtown and can trace their origins back to Ireland (mainly west Cork). If yours is not there and you think that it should be, please let us know.

Go to any small community and you will find "Characters" that was particularly true of Newtown. " The characters, although not as famous as Peerless Jim, nonetheless contributed to what was a unique community. This page will develop as more and more people send in their family histories and photographs and perhaps some memorable stories of Newtown's "Characters".

Peter O'Shea and Mary O'Shea
These photos were sent to us by Tim O'Shea, son of Charlie from Pendoylan Street. Tim is presently living in Mozambique and has promised to dig out more Newtown photos next time he returns to the UK. ) Tim writes: This is Photo of my grand father Peter O'Shea with his whippet and my grandmother Mary O'Shea nee Mary Tobin - I think She is the smaller of the two and the taller lady is somebody who my dad use to call Auntie Nell (from Roland St -I think).Don't know when the photo was taken - probably in the 1920's or 30's. At the time the photos were taken they may have been living in 8 Pendoylan St. before they moved to number 9.
