Peerless' Jim Driscoll was without doubt Newtown's most famous son and Sporting hero. However, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Priests and Nuns and MPs (and one or two villains no doubt) also eminated from these humble beginnings. The above names, taken from Tommy Walsh's poem, are but a few of the families who lived in Newtown and can trace their origins back to Ireland (mainly west Cork). If yours is not there and you think that it should be, please let us know.
Go to any small community and you will find "Characters" that was particularly true of Newtown. " The characters, although not as famous as Peerless Jim, nonetheless contributed to what was a unique community. This page will develop as more and more people send in their family histories and photographs and perhaps some memorable stories of Newtown's "Characters".
