Hi Tom, I have a vivid memory of Memmie in her shop on the corner of North William Street. She was an amazing lady and one of Newtown's 'Great Characters'. She was always ready for a chat but forever chewing gum and humming hymns(one of her favourites was 'Sweet Heart of Jesus') Although tiny in stature she was able to lift large sacks of potatoes and drag them across the shop to the large Avery Scales in the corner (why the potatoes weren't stacked near the scales was always a mystery to me as a child).

In reply to Paul Duggan's mesage surely lots of people from 'the other side of the tracks' play an integral part of Newtown. We were also Irish, went to St Davids school and the Cathedral, both of which were on our side of the tracks. Yes Newtown is about those 7 streets but the community spread a lot wider through the connections of family, school and church. We ought not make this association too inclusive as many of us are connected even though we lived a few hundred yards away.

Thank you to Paul Duggan for the confirmation of the geographical area of Cardiff known as newtown in the 1850's. I too have seen the Map that you referred to. It is all so very interesting to see how and why the area developed. Fortunately my relatives (ROCK) were from Ellen Street and are catholics through the generations.
